A Malaysian team that qualified for the World Cup final has been left out of the gold medal race after missing out on the chance to compete in a World Cup tournament.
A spokesman for the Malaysia Asian Football Confederation (AIFF) said it was not known why Malaysia missed out on qualifying for the tournament but the club’s name was mentioned in the list of participating teams.
He said the team’s name should have been listed in the tournament’s official roster as Malaysia’s.
The Malaysia Asian Cup was scheduled to be held from December 1 to 12.
However, the federation said on Monday that the tournament will be held in the country’s capital Kuala Lumpur from December 8 to 12 and the Malaysia Olympic Association (MAOA) is still waiting to see if the AIFF will give the country a full World Cup bid.
“The AIFF is still reviewing the final list of participants and will notify the federation in due course of the results,” the spokesman said.
In the meantime, the AIF has postponed the tournament until February.
Malaysia’s World Cup team did not make the final cut of the 2018 World Cup, but its players qualified for next year’s tournament.
